HP Releases Desktop PC with Military Standards

Global desktop PC sales continue to slow. However, this does not preclude Hewlett-Packard (HP) to continue releasing the latest desktop PC product lines.

No half-hearted, at an event in Jakarta, Wednesday (07/24/2013), HP released 4 series desktop PCs at once, namely EliteOne 800 G1, G1 EliteDesk 800, ProOne 600 G1, and G1 ProDesk 600. The four were aimed at the business segment.

Present as a business device, HP equip these devices with a variety of features that do not exist in the PC consumer.

For example, four of which are equipped with a safety feature called HP Client Security. Using these features, users can protect the devices at every layer, including hardware, software, and BIOS.

Other value, the products have passed the test of military standards. According to Ricky Handrian, MDM Business Desktop PC HP Indonesia, standardization include durability, shock, and temperature.

These devices have to endure or withstand heavy overwritten with a maximum weight of 75 kg. In addition, products with military standards must withstand shock, although it has been taken away in a car in the distance.

Meanwhile, the desktop version of this device, EliteDesk 800 G1, comes with a slightly higher specification, namely 4-generation Intel Core processor Haswell, Windows 8 Pro, 32 GB RAM, and up to 2 TB HDD.

Carrying the same concept with the EliteBook 800, ProOne 600 HP version of the G1 is the all-in-one PC from HP ProDesk 600 G1. For the problem specification, these two products have the same choice as the Elite 800 series.

So, what distinguishes the two series? According to Ricky, the two series have different processor platforms support. 800 Series uses Intel Q87 platform. While the Pro 600 series using Q85.

“ProDesk Series 600 is a downgraded version of the EliteBook 800. ProDesk device 600 is certainly cheaper than EliteBook 800. Yeah, let’s just ProDesk 600 as the sister of the EliteBook 800,” added Ricky.

Software Centre raises E3m

Lero, the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, raised an additional E3m in research funding in 2012 according to its annual report issued today.

New projects included research contracts with the European Space Agency, United Technologies Research Centre and several EU-funded research consortia. During 2012 Lero announced funding of E22.4m over 5 years through Science Foundation Ireland and technology firms such as IBM and Intel.

Lero also reported that it was awarded five new patents in 2012 covering areas such as self-sacrificing spacecraft swarms and methods of protecting autonomous systems. Forkstream, a spinout company, was established and it has recently been acquired by Openet, a leading Irish transaction management software and services provider. 170 Lero researchers recorded a 47pc increase in journal papers and a 41pc increase in conference papers during the year.

“Our researchers are in demand globally,” commented Prof Mike Hinchey, director, Lero. “The work which is being done in Ireland is world leading across a number of areas including medical devices, agile, cloud and space flight software.”

He said the prolonged Ulster Bank and RBS outage in 2012 was a reminder of what can happen when critical software systems crash due to badly managed changes. In the United States a recent report by the US Food & Drug Administration showed that 20pc of the medical device recalls in the US in 2012 were due to software faults. “Today it is almost impossible to lead a software-free life. Software is the enabling factor in smartphones, smart cities, smart homes, smart health and just about smart anything.”

He added, “Because software can be easily changed, it is often changed badly. Lero specialises in Evolving Critical Systems research which aims to develop methods, techniques, tools, and processes for the development and evolution of highly reliable software systems that maintain, or improve, their reliability as they evolve.”

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache(tm) Mesos(tm) as a Top-Level Project

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, announced today that Apache Mesos has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the project’s community and products have been well-governed under the ASF’s meritocratic process and principles.

Apache Mesos is a cluster manager that provides efficient resource isolation and sharing across distributed applications, or frameworks. It can run multiple frameworks, including Apache Hadoop, MPI, Hypertable, Jenkins, Storm, and Spark, as well as other applications and custom frameworks.

“It was our goal all along to see Mesos become a kernel of the infrastructure stack of the future,” said Benjamin Hindman, Vice President of Apache Mesos. “The project’s graduation from the Apache Incubator is recognition that the software is mature and has brought together a diverse community to sustain it in the future.”

Initially created at the University of California at Berkeley’s AMPLab (the research center also responsible for the original development of Apache Spark) to manage resource sharing and isolation in data centers, Mesos acts as a layer of abstraction between applications and pools of servers. Mesos helps avoid the necessity of creating separate clusters to run individual frameworks and instead making it possible to optimize how jobs are executed across shared machines.

Whilst in the Apache Incubator, Mesos had four releases, and established an Open Source community according to The Apache Way of governance. Additional improvements to the project includes its flexibility to support several application framework languages, and scalability that has been production tested to thousands of nodes and simulated to tens of thousands of nodes and hundreds of frameworks.

Apache Mesos has proven to be reliable for use in production, and has already been adopted by several organizations for cluster management.

“Mesos is the cornerstone of our elastic compute infrastructure,” explained Chris Fry, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Twitter. “It’s how we build all our new services and is critical for Twitter’s continued success at scale … one of the primary keys to our data infrastructure efficiency.”

“We’re using Mesos to manage cluster resources for most of our data infrastructure,” said Brenden Matthews, Engineer at Airbnb and Apache Mesos Committer. “We run Chronos, Storm, and Hadoop on top of Mesos in order to process petabytes of data.” (Chronos is an Airbnb-developed Mesos framework as a replacement for cron, and an example of how custom frameworks can be developed on Mesos to leverage its resource sharing).

“Community support for Apache Mesos is encouraging, particularly as more companies assess how they manage their clusters and look for more efficiency,” added Hindman. “Now that we’ve graduated, we look forward to continuing to grow the number of Mesos adopters and fostering an ecosystem around the project.”

Availability and Oversight
As with all Apache products, Apache Mesos software is released under the Apache License v2.0, and is overseen by a self-selected team of active contributors to the project. A Project Management Committee (PMC) guides the Project’s day-to-day operations, including community development and product releases.

Asus launches Windows 8-based Transformer Book TX300 at Rs 91,999

New Delhi: Asus announced the launch of the Transformer Book TX300 in India at Rs 91,999. The company claims it to be the world’s thinnest Window 8 tablet and detachable notebook.

The Asus Transformer Book is a 13.3-inch notebook with a detachable tablet which has a Full HD IPS touch panel and a 178 degree viewing angle. It comes with an Intel Core i5 processor. The Asus Transformer Book is available with Windows 8 Professional.

It can either be used as a Windows 8 multi-touch tablet or a notebook with keyboard and touchpad. It comes with two types of internal storage device. “As a tablet, the 128GB SSD means apps launch instantly for a slick and seamless Windows 8 experience, while ASUS WebStorage ensures easy access to secure cloud storage when travelling far and wide. Connect Asus Transformer Book to its notebook dock and it instantly becomes a fully functional notebook with up to a 500GB hard drive,” said the company.

In Notebook Mode, the Asus Transformer Book features a backlit keyboard with ambient light control that automatically adjusts its brightness to suit the surroundings. it has up to five hours of battery life in full notebook mode and up to eight hours in tablet mode. It has a front 720p HD and a rear 5-megapixel camera.

The Asus Transformer Book will be available in India across select Asus authorised retail outlets starting second week of July 2013.

It is undeniable that over time, the popularity of Linux is increasing every day. Linux Kernel project which was originally just a fun project by Linux apparently transformed into a project that became the basis for the evolution of the digital world today.

We can see that more and more digital devices are therein using Linux in it. Changes were made in all areas so that Linux can be used by all users, both from the ground level up to the experts though.

One thing that remains a hallmark of Linux is the existence of a shell that is never lost on any Linux distro. TSP Symposium 2013 Keynotes to Focus on Quality Practices for Critical Software

The Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has announced the slate of software engineering thought-leaders who will serve as keynote speakers for the Team Software Process (TSP) Symposium 2013. Held in Dallas, Texas, on September 16-19, the TSP Symposium 2013 keynote line-up includes Bill Curtis, senior vice president and chief scientist with Cast Software; Enrique Ibarra, senior vice president of technology of the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV); and Robert Behler, chief operating officer of the SEI.

The symposium theme, When Software Really Matters, explores the idea that when product quality is critical, high-quality practices are the best way to achieve it.

“When a software system absolutely must work correctly, quality must be built in from the start. A disciplined approach to quality also offers the benefit of lower lifecycle costs. The TSP promotes the application of practices that lead to superior, high-quality products,” said James McHale, TSP Symposium 2013 technical chair. “Our keynote speakers and representatives from industry and government organizations from around the world will share how using TSP helps organizations build quality in from the start when there’s no room for error.”

  • Curtis will assert that the stakes for software-caused operational problems are now larger than ever, approaching a half-billion dollars per incident. Every other aspect of the business is managed by numbers, including IT operations. Software lags behind, however, because the culture of craftsmanship still prevails. Curtis’s talk will challenge that culture: Quality measurement will be challenged for under-measuring non-functional, structural quality, the cause of many operational disasters. Productivity measurement will be challenged for not penalizing baselines when rework is shifted into future releases as technical debt. Software measurement will be challenged to better express outcomes in terms that justify investments for improving quality. The word “quality” will be challenged as the wrong way to frame the argument. Curtis will propose a measurement stack or measurement pyramid to help translate software numbers to business numbers. At the foundation of this pyramid are the Personal Software Process (PSP) and TSP.
